Hidden under the railway arches in Herne Hill, a stone’s throw from Brockwell Park, you will find Canopy Beer Co; a brewery and tap room that has been brewing small batch beers since 2014. The emphasis is on drinkable, accessible beers made with minimal intervention - no filtration, no finings and no pasteurisation. The beers are big, juicy and jammed full of flavour.
Seasonality is a cornerstone of the brewery ethos - early autumn brings the annual Green Hop beer, brewed using hops grown in Brixton & Herne Hill gardens and allotments; winter heralds the arrival of the coveted Imperial Stout, with a different version created each year – look out for the barrel aged versions too. Spring and summer mark the arrival of seasonal pale ales – light, juicy and perfect for a picnic in the park.
The Tap Room
If you venture down to visit the brewery itself then in the midst of a plethora of brewing equipment a small bar welcomes you - with ten keg lines and an occasional cask there’s plenty of choice from the Canopy Beer Co range and usually a local or exotic guest beer on tap too. Tasting flights, local snacks and a cosy atmosphere make this friendly tap room a must for locals and visitors alike. All are amazed that all brewing, bottling, kegging and canning takes place on-site in the compact brewery.
Welcoming cyclists, parents, singles, couples and groups - young and old alike, the tap room defies categorisation. Everyone is welcome and everyone comes - friendships are forged over a beer. The tap room offers more than just a drink though, hosting film festivals and music nights, pop-up food events, hop festivals, tasting events and yard parties. One thing is for sure: nothing - apart from the excellent beer - stays the same for long at Canopy Beer Co.
